Here is a chronology of what happened leading up to Tyre Nichols’ death.

Tyre Nichols, 29, was beaten to death on January 7 and five Memphis police officers have been detained and charged with murder in connection with the incident.
At a news conference on Thursday, Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy stated that although each of the five involved parties had a distinct part to play in the situation in issue, they are all accountable for Tyre Nichols’ murder.
According to the attorneys for Nichols’ family, Nichols was slain after what was intended to be a routine traffic check evolved into a violent beating evocative of the attack on Rodney King in 1991.
The attorneys and family issued a statement after the arrests saying, “The news today from Memphis officials that these five cops are being held legally responsible for their fatal and violent conduct gives us hope as we continue to strive for justice for Tyre.”
Black Nichols passed away three days after the traffic stop.
“It was so purposefully brutal. There was simply no reason or justification for being so cruel or brutal toward a helpless human being. This is a citizen, after all. In spite of having a duty to safeguard the public, these Memphis police officers beat the man for more than three minutes, according to attorney Antonio Romanucci, who spoke to TIME on Tuesday.
